Environmental impact resulting from CVS operations To advance its goal, CVS has developed a roadmap and is in the process of identifying specific internal and external targets aimed at driving operational efficiency and reducing its environmental footprints. Climate Change and GHG Emissions CVS Health recognizes that its business activities, in particular the operation of about 77 million square feet of retail space in its 7,800 retail drugstores, contribute to the impact on world’s climate change. CVS continuously measures its GHG emissions and is trying to reduce its energy use, water use and waste. Since 2008, CVS is measuring and also reporting its GHG emissions. CVS monitors them in accordance with the GHG protocol published by …show more content…

CVS has focused its energy strategy on the operational areas where it can have the greatest impact by improving efficiency in its lighting, heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, cooler and freezer use, as well as in the transportation of goods. Electricity use in 2014 was flat despite a 2% increase in overall square footage, which is partly attributable to the use of its Energy Management System (EMS), lighting retrofits and other new store efficiency measures. EMS helps drive energy efficiency consistently across CVS stores and distribution centers by allowing it to manage, monitor and adjust lighting, HVAC, and other systems from a central location. As of 2014, more than 90% of CVS stores and 50% of its distribution centers were operating with an …show more content…

It should go for self-reliant stores and distribution centers by employing solar energy. 2) CVS should also collaborate with its transport partners and use such fuels as clean diesel, which can help it reduce the CO2 emissions in the environment. Lighting Retrofits A significant amount of energy is used to light the facilities. CVS strategy, given the scale of its footprint, is to build long-term success through sustained year-over-year investments in proven lighting technologies. In 2014, its new store construction included LED lighting for exterior lighting and signage, and it continued its multi-year lighting retrofit program, once again achieving measurable progress. This included LED retrofits of coolers and freezers at 923 of its existing stores and 30 distribution centers. Recommendations: 1) CVS shouldn’t restrict the usage of LED to stores. It should also do the same in corporate offices where the usage of light is also high. 2) CVS must also consider buying energy efficient electronic and electric equipment and replacing them on regular basis.
