Benjamin Franklin made the first library we know today in 1731 CE, so why stop making them now? Libraries have done plenty of good for people. They have brought an education for many, offered a sanctuary for others, and even assisted people that are considered to be underserved.
To start, libraries have provided an area for many scholars to research and study.
Studies have shown that more than half of college students use libraries’ resources for their research. Although many would say that sports should take up the space that the libraries occupy, studies have also shown that “The city's libraries have more users than major professional sports” (Doc A). Studies have also shown that homeless people are using libraries as an area of safety and to stay warm.
Libraries have also offered computers for many people that can not afford one. This allowed many to not only get access to a safe place to stay but also get an education without needing to pay. Libraries made homeless people, no longer homeless, their homes became libraries. One boy that was not homeless but only spoke Yiddish went to a library and years later said that “If I had to pay, it is doubtful I would have read the plays of
Shakespeare” (Doc A). However, not only do libraries provide a sanctuary and offer resources to educate many, but librarians are also people that many people could consider family, they can help many with questions that they have, help when someone has a problem, and provide support when something might be wrong.
