Summary:
The topic of my research was “Should all babies born in Australia have their DNA profiled and stored in a database at birth?” I chose this topic after view a news article on the ABC website, which spoke about the remains of a young child found in a suitcase and how the police were having trouble identifying the remains. To research this topic, I had decided that the best sources would be journal articles and science publications. I also viewed an interview on YouTube to find primary data. In doing so, I developed my ICT and literature capabilities by using appropriate technology and literature while writing my folio and outcome and while interacting with teachers and peers. For example, I was not able to include an experiment in my research, as there were complex genetics involved and it would not aid the in answer of my question. This process would have required a significant amount of care and ethical understand to complete. Similarly, I was unable to conduct a survey as most people had a misguided view on DNA profiles. The data gathered would be interesting, though a luxury, as it would not have helped me answer my research question. Instead, I focussed on journal article about studies regarding my subject. Fortunately, they were sufficient and provided much of the information needed. I viewed an interview to gain extra insight from a pioneer in the field.
Ethics Is an important part of any work and as I was working with intellectual property I needed to pay close attention to my referencing to make sure I did not plagiarise anything. I made sure that all of the information and ideas used were referenced appropriately and that I had used the Harvard style referencing tool in Microsoft Word had built in. In cases where the source did not provide the details needed to cite them, I would try to identify them based on what was provided or used a different source when possible.
