DUFF or Designated Ugly Fat Friend refers to Bianca Piper, who battled this word’s meaning throughout her journey of embracing her differences and finding herself within the movie DUFF. As one who has struggled with insecurity and self-identity, Bianca Piper is me. Her story of accepting herself even when her friends were different is somewhat equivalent to mine. Throughout my life, I have learned who I am. In the past, I constantly compared myself to others, whether it was about looks, athletic ability, or even height, I always thought of myself as less than they were. Similar to that, I altered my appearance by buying new clothes, wearing makeup, and even changing my smile. I became someone that I didn’t recognize. In time, Bianca realized that changing was not doing her any favors. Somewhere along the line, I had the same revelation and I started becoming independent. I recognized that I didn’t need to be popular to have friends. I not only accepted my differences—being short, Asian—, but I embraced them. I espoused who I am. I now have total confidence in my appearance, athletic ability, and racial background, which has allowed me to rise up as a leader in the community, at school, and in sports. I am not only cross-country captain, but am also a leader in National Honors Society, Leo Club, and multiple volunteer outings. Bianca went through a change of discovering herself and found out she does not have to become someone new. I went through this same journey and came out as a confident, driven, independent young woman who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in.
“DUFF” in my book now stands for diligent, unashamed, fierce, and free. All of these traits compose an array of characteristics that I’ve developed through finding myself. I now constitute “DUFF” as a word for someone who is different from the crowd, that they forge their own path, and that makes me proud to be a
