Moviegoers spent their Christmas holiday in a galaxy far, far away – as Star Wars: The Force Awakens continued its saber-wielding dominance. In its second weekend on the market, Star Wars: The Force Awakens unwrapped an astounding (and record setting) $153.5 million – a total that any film would kill to have on its opening weekend. Episode VIII embraced a 38% drop, but continued its bombardment in 4,134 theaters across the country. Oh, and it has already crossed the $1 billion threshold. That’s right. It took less than two weeks for Star Wars to gross $1 billion ($1.09 billion) – crossing the mark faster than any other film. The film has amassed a staggering $544.5 million on the domestic front alone ($546 million, foreign) – and as Star Wars continues to post these types of numbers, Avatar is sure to be shaking in its boots. The comedy was met with terrible reviews from critics, and maintains a wretched 28% over at RottenTomatoes. Still, Daddy’s Home easily won over comedy crowd over the holiday, proving the Ferrell/Wahlberg tandem is as vibrant as in the past. The film was produced on $50 million. Yet another new release, Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, secured the third spot – grabbing a modest $17.5 million. The film, which also stars Bradley Cooper, was met with mixed reviews (57%) – but the star power of Lawrence is obviously alive and well. The film is working against a production budget of $60 million. Fourth place went to Sisters, starring Tina Fey – adding $13.8 million. Sisters has been a quiet hit over the past two weeks, mostly due to the abundance of competition that’s out there.
