According to Sean Wilentz there was, "A male public sphere of politics, business, and the market, and a females private sphere of domestic duties and child rearing," (Wilentz 64). Women were expected to take care of the home and their family. Being home was important, as women were in charge of keeping the children clean and clothed. More importantly, the children must also be kept morally pure.
From the fifteenth century to the seventeenth centuries society experienced a shift from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. During this time Europe underwent many significant changes that were often expressed through the historical art. Passionate and experienced artists used their skills to create masterpieces that would highlighted these changes and led to the success of their careers. During this shift Medieval point of views began to fade away and a new Era full of new perspectives began to form. The Renaissance was known by many as the rebirth of the humanist culture.
Women were treated a lot differently than men were. Men controlled everything that went on. They made all of the decisions, and women did not have a say over
wearing the same clothes every single day. It is obvious to compare them to the lower classes of the Elizabethan men. Education During the Renaissance DBQ During the Renaissance, education was used to study philosophy and to enlighten oneself with the ancient civilizations, but over time it became to be increasingly challenged and twisted. These ideas eventually were viewed to some people as a waste of time. There was greater criticism for education and there was a need for more workers instead of the humanist philosophers. Lasting from approximately 1300-1700, the Renaissance was a period of great change that led to many inventions, advances and achievements. The word Renaissance means “rebirth”. The social classes were “rebirthed” into a growth that moved the social structure of the society into totally different directions than what had it had previously been accustomed to before the Renaissance. The four social classes were: the nobles, the merchants, the tradesmen, and the unskilled workers and during the renaissance they took on a growth that went in directions that caused society to expand and the social classes to be redefined. The nobles lived on large estates outside the city walls and served as military officers, royal advisers and politicians. The merchants sought to protect their wealth by controlling the government and marrying to noble families.
Unlike today’s society, different types of clothing were reserved for a certain occasion. Queen Elizabeth had huge impact on women’s clothing because she wanted women to seem “virgin-esque.” In order to seem “virgin-esque” women had to cover their bodies and couldn’t seem provocative. The wealth of these merchants clearly influenced as well as supported new artist, writers, and philosophers. Among these wealthy merchant families was the Medici Family, whose wealth was in banking.
