Nick is Gatsby’s neighbor and Daisy’s cousin, and cautiously assists their relationship. Nick and Gatsby live in the West Egg area of Long Island, while Daisy lives across the way in East Egg. Fitzgerald uses these neighborhoods to symbolize the differences between the newly and old rich. In the novel, Nick and Gatsby are both newly parevenus individuals who do not come from a rich family. Carraway is earning his way to wealth in the banking industry, while Gatsby received his wealth predominantly from bootlegging.

Jay is in love with Daisy Buchanan, Nick’s cousin and wife of Tom Buchanan. Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, who lives in the valley of ashes with her husband, George. Nick is also romantically involved with Jordan Baker, Daisy’s friend and a professional golfer. With Daisy’s naivety, Myrtle’s promiscuity, and Jordan’s confidence, all three women have vastly different personalities often associated with women in the 1920’s.

He continues to hope to one day see Daisy, and for her to fall for him again. Understanding this, Carraway feels bad for Gatsby, but also confused. The only reason Daisy marries Tom is because she wants to keep her social status and wants to be wealthy. “Daisy’s love for her brutal husband can be sublimely dismissed by Gatsby as “merely personal,” so her defects of character and taste cannot affect Gatsby’s attitude toward her” (Bloom 6). Gatsby loves Daisy, but Daisy will not be with him because Gatsby is not wealthy. She gets tired of waiting for him and decides to marry Tom Buchanan, a wealthy man in the same social class as Daisy.

One of the most controversial characters in the book is Daisy Buchanan. At the beginning of the book, I thought Daisy would be a very minor character and would have little or no impact in the book. After I finished the book, I realized she had an impact; however, I still did not think she had a huge role in the novel.
