No matter who you are or where you’re from, you know the Dallas Cowboys. You might know them as America’s Team, Big D, The Boys, or the Doomsday Defense. People either love them, or you hate them. You know the Dallas Cowboys, but how much do you really know them? The Cowboys have a rich, interesting history that will open your eyes to what happens on the football field, and what happens behind the scenes at the front office. The Dallas Cowboys were formed in 1960 as an expansion team for the National Football League (NFL). They were almost destined for success when Owner Clint Murchison Jr. hired Tex Schramm as the General Manager, Tom Landry as the Head Coach, and Gil Brandt as the Player Personnel Director. America’s Team was sold to Jerry Jones. His first orders of business were hiring Jimmy Johnson as the Head Coach. His motto was, “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” This really applied to the Cowboys. They also drafted Troy Aikman, a star quarterback out of UCLA, with the number one overall draft pick in 1989. Like the Original Three before them, they were destined for success, but it didn’t come early. In 1989, the Cowboys went 1-15, but things were looking up for them.
The 90s saw the Dallas Cowboys in their prime. With Troy Aikman as their quarterback, and the additions of Emmitt Smith at running back and Michael Irvin at wide receiver, they were almost unstoppable. The best four years in Cowboys history happened between 1993 and 1996. In ‘93 and ‘94, the Cowboys destroyed the Buffalo Bills to win two straight Super Bowls (Super Bowls XXVII & XXVIII). In 1994, the Cowboys had been in ¼ of all Super Bowls played. In ‘94, Jimmy Johnson parted ways with the Cowboys, and another legendary head joined Big D, Barry Switzer. In 1996, the Cowboys got revenge on the Pittsburgh Steelers to become the champions of Super Bowl XXX. America’s Team had won the Super Bowl 3 out of 4 years. In 2006, a new era began as the Cowboys drafted QB Tony Romo out of Eastern Illinois. When he was drafted, Romo said, “I feel like I am going to be with the Cowboys for the rest of my career. I love it.” He has quickly become one the best QB’s in Cowboys history. In 2009, the shining, modern, and stunning AT&T stadium opened.
