In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hilton the two characters Dally and Johnny both have significant differences and similarities. Both of their lives are the same and very different. Dally and Johnny are both similar because they are both gallant and they both care about each other a lot. They are different because they give Ponyboy two different types of advice and Johnny is sensitive and Dally is tough,cold,and mean. Therefore,Dally and Johnny both have significant differences and similarities.
Dally and Johnny both have this one significant similarity, they both care for each other. For instance,when Johnny died Dally finally lost his cool. Johnny was the only thing Dally cared about, Dally said to Johnny as he died “Oh damnit, Johnny,don’t die,please don’t die…” (149). This shows that Dally loved Johnny, he was the one in the gang that held him together. Johnny is the only one in the group that Dally cared for,he was like Dally’s pet. They are both gallant. When Johnny died he says he doesn’t mind dying anymore because the children's lives he saved were a lot more valuable than his life. He states in a letter to Ponyboy “I don’t mind dying now. It’s worth it. It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine,they have more to live for.” (178). This shows that even though Johnny died young he knew that he is not going to do most of the things he wants to do or see most of the things he wants to see. Dally does not care about what can happen when he does something. After Johnny dies Dally robs a store and knows what is going to happen to him. He was not afraid of the consequences of what he has done. When he pulled out the empty gun on the police he knew that he was dead “And even as the policemen's guns spit fire into the night I knew that was what Dally wanted.” (154).
