The mid and late 1900’s is characterized by the seemingly endless struggle of ideologies between the Soviet Union and their spread of communism and the United States and their idea of democracy. The spread of communism reached Poland, where Lech Walesa is from. Communism often takes the people 's rights which is unfair and an individual is bound to speak out in order for change to occur for the best interest of the people. Walesa stood up for the working people and ensured that Poland wouldn’t become oppressive like the Soviet Union. He is a notable and prominent figure in Poland which should be recognized for his accomplishments.
During the time that Arthur Miller created the Crucible, America was dealing with a very similar problem compared to the Salem witch trails. This problem was called McCarthyism, it was believed that a few hundred communists had entered the country, and they posed a threat to American safety. The accusations of communists in the country caused mass paranoia among the entire United States. Arthur Miller was one of them accused of being a communist and was trialed for it, which most likely lead to the creation of his play the Crucible. After the end of both events - the Salem witch hunt and McCarthyism - the effects afterward left devastating results and lingered for many more years to come.
In the 1940 's and 1950 's, an anti-Communist movement swept the United States of America. Fueled by the anti-Communist actions of Congress, particularly a Senator from Wisconsin by the name of Joseph McCarthy, the movement escalated and many people lost their jobs as a result of various blacklists. Congressional hearings, both in front of HUAC and McCarthy Senate committee were a study in organized persecution. The actions taken during the "Red Scare" were eventually given the general name McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence.
My dad was a communist, he still is one today but only a little bit intense. You couldn’t be conscripted during his second year to college (math major). He fought against the American and its puppet government in the Vietnam War, and the Khmer Rouge in the Cambodian war, and the Chinese in 1979. And now let’s talk a little bit about me, I’m a pacifist, if you want the truth (Shamelessly copying Holden Cauldfield from Catcher in the Rye).
Imagine the wicked House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) arrest an innocent man. The HUAC does not arrest the man because he has committed a murder, but because he is a communist. Many communists became victims of HUAC in the Red Scare crisis of the 1950s. These communists made the right decision to speak out for their freedom and against injustice. These communists also spoke out for their freedom of different beliefs.
McCarthy manipulated the media, told outrageous stories about the communist conspiracy in the United States, and used his power and America’s fear to besmirch any opponents as “communist sympathizers” to make sure he remained at the top. Actually, most conservative members of Congress supported McCarthy because it helped them gain votes during elections. The majority of McCarthy 's movement attacked liberals and members of the Democratic Party and this aided anyone who was not part of those topics and organizations. Then McCarthy began to target the Army because they wouldn’t favor David Schine, one of his former investigators, who had been drafted in. “Senator Joseph McCarthy began hearings investigating the United States Army, which he charged with being ‘soft’ on communism.
Have you ever felt too scared to speak your mind because every time you do someone makes fun of you or calls you cruel names? Can you imagine getting stuck on an island with no adult to help me survive? Would you be able to survive? The book the Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding. In the beginning of the story a group of school boys from England are in a plane that crashes onto an island, but they all fell in different areas of the island.
In the short passage from Dalton Trumbo’s novel Johnny Got His Gun, Trumbo uses three key techniques to characterize the relationship between the young man and his father. The use of point of view, details such as; symbolism, and the sentence structure of the novel, help conclude that the son and the father have a close relationship. The point of view of this novel helps characterize the son and father’s relationship. The novel was written through the son’s point of view becoming 3rd person limited, but there are parts in the novel where Trumbo revels the dad’s words.
With all of the accusations going around, people were forgetting that everyone can have their own opinion. Edward R Murrow, a television host of See It Now bashed McCarthy by saying “’We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty’” (Roberts, 2). Murrow was saying that just because a person disagrees with what the president or a government official says, does not mean they are a communist. The United States has freedom of speech, and citizens can say whatever they want about the government.
According to Commager, among those who are really disloyal are “Those who for selfish and private purposes stir up national antagonisms” (Foner 240), i.e. those politicians and public figures who cause national panic and an animosity towards a certain group. At this point in history, those at the wrong end of the stick were communists, for the anticommunist crusade was in full swing during the Cold War. Ironically, in 1950 three years after “Who is Loyal to America?” was published, Senator Joseph McCarthy delivered his infamous speech claiming that the United States State Department was infested with communists, sparking an age of McCarthyism and bringing about the most ruthless times of the anticommunism crusade. Those who did not conform
The main accuser during this time was Joseph McCarthy. The people who were accused were just everyday people. Joseph McCarthy said that he knew people who are members of the communist party working for the government, he may have done this because he didn’t like those people. This scared everyone, primarily because during the years that followed WWII everyone feared communist. So after McCarthy made these statements, it almost made like a ripple effect by having everyday people, being accused of people that “suspected” that they were communists as well.
It was hard to find a Communist in Louisiana in the 1930s. In 1935, merely eighty of the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) members lived in the bayous of Louisiana. However, an interesting man with some intriguing leftist views was a Louisiana Senator. His name was Huey Long.
One of the arguments here goes on with the communists masses has the value and if the individual cannot produce then the person from the mass is expendable and doesn’t exist no more . The pride in America and the values that were gifted to the people were shown and that Sheen
This kind of hysteria caused the Red Scare, which was a period that Americans thought communists were working to destroy America. This mass fear of communism ruined people’s lives and made them turn against their own family and friends. Joseph McCarthy played an
In the passage from the novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, Trumbo tells the story of a young boy named Joe and his father, who have a very close relationship. They each love to do the same things, but Joe thinks it is time to experience life on his own. Trumbo uses techniques such as Joe’s point of view, imagery, and unquoted dialogue to illustrate the strong relationship between Joe and his father. First, Trumbo uses third person limited point of view to only share the main character’s thoughts throughout the story.
