I will discuss how small and large gifts are equally harmful since they influence the prescribing behaviors of doctors. The main text I will discuss is titled “All Gifts Large and Small”, by Dana Katz. The other articles are “Following the Script: How Drug Reps make friends and influence Doctors”, by Adriane Fugh- Berman and Shahram Ahari, and “Conflict of Interest in Medical Practice”, by Stephan R. Latham. Katz main argument is that doctors prescribing habits are largely impacted by the gifts they receive even with the current restrictions about not allowing large gifts to be given. Throughout the essay, I’ll explain the various forms of gift giving pharmaceutical companies participate in and how these create conflicts of interest. Pharmaceutical companies engage in various forms of gift giving. I will show this by drawing examples from three different academic articles.
