However, throughout the school’s prosperous years, The Juilliard School of Music has had 6 presidents, created additional divisions with superb instructors and the school altered its name and relocated to a lively center in New York. An article published by The Juilliard School’s dance division, “History,” states, “The Juilliard School’s Dance Division was established in 1951 during William Schuman’s tenure as the School’s president. Its first director was Martha Hill” (Par. 1). Martha Hill was an inspiring dance instructor who taught at The Juilliard School of Music when the dance division was established in 1945. Hill and Schuman transformed The Juilliard School of Music’s identity from a school solely for musicians to one of the greatest teaching institutions to offer education in multiple dance genres.

She began dancing at a very young age when she attended the Judimar School of Dance. She began to believe that she didn’t want to be a dancer being a dancer is something she needed to do. While attending this school she studied both ballet and modern dance. She then attended Fisk University where she studies Psychology for three semesters and then left to return to her hometown to attend the Philadelphia Dance Academy. At the Philadelphia Dance Academy she studied in addition to dance, kinesiology, dance history, and labanotation; which is the structured dance notation.
High School: As you can see from my resume I have been involved in a lot of extracurricular activities. In high school I was on the varsity Dazzler Dance Team all four years. I was recognized as a leader on the team not only by the team, but by my coach. I helped lead our team my senior year to a 2nd place finish at nationals in lyrical. I also trained and was on a competitive dance team outside of school, at Miller Marley School of dance.
When dance and social activism intersect, I get excited. All of my experiences with dance as a tool for social change have been profound and evoking. The work I do with Donald Byrd and Spectrum Dance Theater company (SDT) is tremendously relevant. It unapologetically challenges and disrupts societal systems, people’s beliefs, thoughts, and their relations with others who are different from them. Working with SDT has taught me that dance, my passion, part of my identity, is a tool for social change.
There are many reasons as to why I want to lead. Especially this group of girls. One reason being this group of girl’s have become my sisters. I want to work harder and I feel as though leading will help me achieve that goal. I also, want the girls to work harder and become better dancers.

Being involved in the Indian American Student Assocation allows me to get in touch with my culture while also exploring numerous forms of dance from the nation of India. From Bhangra to Raas, these dance forms have been my outlets after a long work day or trying to ease my troubled mind from time to time. It has also allowed me to show my school how pertinent it is to learn and appreciate other cultures that are so diversely coloring America everyday. Although these are only two of the many activities I participate and lead in, every experience I garner from these activities have helped shape who I am. The willingness I have to strive to become the person I want to, through my activities and willpower, are aspects I will never let go of in college and beyond.

Is Dance a Sport or an Art? Some people think dance is not a sport. They think it’s an art because it is nothing but remembering dance moves. However, I believe dance is a sport.
Dance has been a vital part of my life since the seventh grade. Spending my summers at intensives and my afternoons commuting an hour to the studio, I have willingly dedicated all my energy. Dance has been a source of motivation, gratification, and inspiration, leading me to pursue this art form at a higher level. With ambitions of one day finding a company where I can share my passion for dance through performance and movement, Indiana University will help prepare and challenge me through a rigorous program. Specifically, the University would allow me to transfer the knowledge learned in class to the stage through the opportunity to perform.
Walking in my freshman year into drill team, my love for dance grew tremendously. Drill team has helped me venture out into more styles and ways of dancing, and has without a doubt been my favorite. To be a Kilgore College Rangerette, would be an absolute dream come true. The amount of time I would spend putting in all the work would be worth every second. Watching them perform live on their field, made me want to work even harder to become one.
