The Crucible Almost everyone in the play The Crucible has something to do with the hangings of John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey and the other five people that were hung as well, but there were a select few that had a huge impact on the death of the protagonist john proctor 's death. These select few are the girls that were dancing in the woods which include Abigail Williams, Tituba, Betty Parris, Mercy Lewis, Susanna Walcott, Mary Warren, and Ruth Putnam. The others include Deputy Governor Danforth, Thomas Putnam, and John Proctor himself. The girls that were dancing in the woods are the ones that started everything. When Abigail gets caught by Reverend Parris she decides to lie and tell him that they were just dancing and Betty Putman fainted when she was frightened by Parris when jumped out of nowhere. When Mrs. Putnam comes in to talk Parris about the incident that happened before, she says “i’d not call it sick; the devil’s touch is heavier than sick. It’s death, drivin’ into them, forked and hoofed.” she is responding to her daughter Betty not waking up after she fainted and is suggesting that they have Reverend Hale in to inspect her. When Hale comes and talks to Abigail and the other girls that were dancing in the forest she blames it on Tituba by saying that she forced her to do these bad things. Then after being whipped by parris, Tituba decides to say that the devil is doing it and that she saw Goody Osburn with the devil. Then the other girls go along with what Tituba was saying and begin to blame innocent people. This is how the witch trials begin and well as John Proctor 's death will as well. Two other people that had to do with Proctor 's Death are Deputy Governor Danforth and Thomas Putnam. This is both of there faults in the way that Danforth does not question the girls and just goes with whatever they say. For example when they are in court and abigail says “I have been hurt, Mr. Danforth; i have seen my blood runnin’ out! I have been near to murdered everyday because i done my duty pointing out the devil 's people-and this is my reward? To be mistreated, denied, questioned like A-” then Danforth says “Child, I do not Mistrust you-” this shows that Danforth believes everything they say rather than all of the adults. How can someone be so clueless about what people are telling him and the truth? Then there is putnam who has a history of accusing people of things like witchcraft so that he can buy their land.
