The book Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is about a mentally retarded kid, named Charlie. He wanted to become smart and normal. This led to an operation by a group of researchers who had hoped it would make Charlie smart. This book details Charlie’s journey through his retarded and smart life. Charlie Gordon is a thirty two year old man, who is mentally retarded. His college teacher, Alice Kinnian, recommended Charlie for a surgical experiment that could make him intelligent. Alice noticed that Charlie was very eager to learn, and tried to the best of his abilities to learn. He was then chosen by a group of scientists to be used as a guinea pig in a surgery that should increase his intelligence. Charlie works at Donner’s Bakery in New York City as a janitor and a delivery boy. The workers always offended him, but Charlie did not comprehend that he was being mocked. After a few tests, which included a maze race with Algernon, a mouse, which already underwent the surgery, Charlie experiences the operation. At first he is dissatisfied because there was no change in his intellect. However, his teacher Alice had helped him improve in areas of spelling and grammar. He then began to read books, to gain knowledge. At the bakery, he makes the workers of the bakery feel inferior because he has become much smarter than them. He gets fired from his job, because no one can take the new Charlie. He started to gain more intelligence, he remember his mother, Rose, who neglected and punished Charlie for being retarded.
