Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet during the middle ages. However, Dante was not just an average poet, rather he was a massively influential writer who published some of the most popular works from his time period. Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 in Florence, Italy. For the majority of his life, he stuck around in Florence and wrote different works. However, in the year 1302, Dante’s life was thrown into a frenzy when he fell out of favor and was exiled from his birthplace of Florence and was told he would never come home. There is no doubt that Dante’s life was pretty complicated and emotional. In 1308, the great poet began the greatest work that he would ever write. Over the course of twelve years, Dante Alighieri finished writing the Divine Comedy. Then, he died the following year in 1321. The story of the Divine Comedy follows Dante himself, as he is taking a tour through Hell. When Dante is walking through the woods at one point, he encounters Virgil and they set off through purgatory, the inferno, and then out through paradise (Dante 9). In order to fully understand the significance of what Dante wrote, one must understand that what he put out for the public to read took some serious guts and Dante was furious with anyone who contributed to his expulsion. As the Poem continues, Dante ends up having multiple Popes and other important (still living) people of the time being punished in the inferno for different sins that Alighieri thought they committed. So, in full it is easy to see that Dante was not too afraid of showing his built up frustration with the way that his life was going. A Harpy is a creature that bares the face of a women but has the body of a bird of prey. In greek mythology, they are known for basically being scavengers who would either steal food and dishearten characters or simply just hunt and kill people.
