As Dante the pilgrim continues through the circles of hell, Dante presents readers with a powerful juxtaposition between himself and Pier della Vigna, a pitiable soul condemned to the second tier of hell for committing suicide. Both men come from strikingly similar histories, but when further examined, the roads they took explain their difference. Depicted as an upstanding man of high honor, della Vigna is shown as a character that is nearly impossible not to feel sympathy for. Throughout The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen and The Color of Fire by Ann Rinaldi, there were many obvious similarities but also several key differences. While analyzing the two stories, comparisons between characters, setting, point of view and theme became apparent. Both stories discuss characters who overcame a struggle in their lives. These historical fiction pieces help readers understand the hardships of certain historical events and the reality of life for people living in those eras. The connections between stories will help readers make connections between important events of the past.
The “Night” is Dark Can you imagine going on a hayride with two hundred people in a wagon meant for twenty five people. Now imagine that the wagon is enclosed from all sides with just one hole in the ceiling for air. How do you feel? Now imagine that this hayride will last for three days without any bathroom breaks or much to eat or drink.
The passage opens up with a sentence in latin “Vexilla regis prodeunt inferni” to put in evidence that Dante is near to meet the prince of demons, Satan. In the beginning,as the first verse discloses, Dante saw nothing in the darkness, except for the silhouette of what he thinks is a huge windmill from which a cold air blows. The wind produced by Lucifer is a parody of the breath of the Holy Spirit, which proceeds from the Father and the Son, who is ardent of charity while this air freezes the lake in which the lost souls are trapped. The vision of the monster is prepared with a wise expectation, coming only after Dante described the traitors immersed in the Cocito area, the Giudecca.
Throughout this book Hunter S. Thompson wrote about a two year period of the Hell’s Angels. Thompson wrote about their background and how the gang got their notorious fame. The gang was founded in 1950 near San Bernardino, California and the group consisted of around eighty-five members at the time. The motorcycle gang stayed the same until 1964 when the Hell’s Angels were accused of gang rape of two underage women. Some members were arrested, but the charges were later dropped.
Throughout the course of human history, literary works of various styles and genres across multiple cultures have had varying depictions of both genders. A literary work’s depiction of gender, particularly females, is generally dependent on the culture and/or society its author hail from as well as other factors such as regional and political ones. Despite such differences, literary works can share similarities in the depiction of genders. Antigone and The Canterbury Tales are prime examples of such types of literary works. Despite that nearly two millennia past between the publication of the two-respective works, the two have similar as well as contrasting portrayals of women.
In Dante’s Inferno, the character of Virgil acts as a guide through Hell and Purgatory. In addition to this, it is almost universally agreed that Virgil is a depiction of the full extent of human intellect and that he also acts as a microcosm of how a good government should act. There are many reasons for this belief, such as how helpful he is throughout the two books he is in and where he is located in hell. The author Dante does something extra with Virgil and the character Dante though. Virgil is a representation of the Empire like Rome that Dante wanted to be established, and his relationship with Dante is a microcosm of the Church and the State.
This stage direction emphasises on the luxury and the build of the house. He is absolutely dazed and dreamy as mentioned and is craving a few hours of sleep. '' oh, sleep,sleep,sleep,undisturbed sleep.'' This line tells us that the war has drained him straight through and that it has been continous and tiresome. Raina warns him about the possibility of him being captured but since he craves nothing but sleep, he associates death with eternal sleep and pefers to be captured.
In Dante’s Inferno, Dante Alighieri's depiction of Satan at the bottom of hell reveals the theme that in Hell the punishment is always befitting of the due to the fact that the lower you go, the farther that person is from god. The picture of Satan satisfies the reader because he shows that he is the opposite of god and that he is full of evil. Lucifer is the demon in the circles of hell which he has three faces, and bat like wings in which he creates the cold wind where the sinners suffer. “The face in the middle was red, the color of anger. The face on the right was white blended with yellow, the color of impotence.
The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri, follows the pilgrim as he travers through the three spheres of eternity: Hell, Purgatory, Heaven. Hell is described as a pit of rings, each containing a unique sin which increases in severity as one travels downward. Throughout the Inferno, Dante takes great care to highlight sins especially heinous to his particular historical context of the Medieval Ages. Canto XIX of Inferno looks to the sin of Simony, a sin common among the popes in Dante’s day. Simony is the selling a Church positions or misuse of Church authoritative offices for earthly wealth and gain.

The year is 1302, Dante Alighieri is absent from his role as one of the six supreme magistrates. Prior to that he had an extremely successful political career who had no problem exerting his power. Dante considered himself “a moderate White, he found it necessary during the two-month term to join in banishing his brother-in-law, Corso Donati, and his "first friend," Guido Cavalcanti, as ringleaders respectively of the Blacks and Whites.” Blacks and Whites were faction groups who had ongoing fights in the streets of Florence. This is an extremely admirable trait of a great ruler and/or ruler, the ability to at any moment turn on friends or family in order to uphold the city or government.
In Dante’s Inferno, he writes about his journey through hell for the purpose of recognizing his sins. He goes through this journey with Virgil, a voice of reason for Dante. Dante meets people through his journey of the many circles in the Inferno that lead him down into the center of hell, where Satan is. Satan is seen as being monster-like with three heads, representing a mocking of the Trinity and blowing his wings around the cocytus river. The final thing seen here is the fact that Dante’s description of Satan is a bit disappointing compared to the other descriptions he has written about the inferno.
Great works of literature such as Dante’s: Inferno as well as One Thousand and One Nights contain similar themes such as religion, redemption, and love. These themes encompass the philosophical and religious ideas that can be found in both texts. Although Dante’s: Inferno is written on the base of Catholicism and One Thousand and One Nights is written on the base of Islam, the views we are presented with in both are not unique , but rather found in one form or another throughout history and in various cultures spread across the world.
When starting to read Dante’s Inferno a person is often confronted by a very distinctive kind of writing style. This writing style is distinctive of the time in which the Inferno was written estimated to be around 1314 to 1317, before Dante’s death in 1321. This can lead to questions about the composition of certain lines in a passage of the text. One of these questions, why did he write it like this, popped into my head not long after starting to read Cantos I. In the first Canto, Dante meets the three beast of hell and Virgil (Alighieri 392-394).
