Character and theme :
Dante’s determination towards learning new things enables him to to become a better person as determination can regulate growth, for growth can only be achieved through continuous attempts and struggle. When Dante becomes tired of climbing the rocks and halts to take a quick break, Virgil explains to him there is more of hell yet to be covered, then “[Dante] [rises] his breath and made it appear more steady and [replies][to lead on]as it pleases [Virgil],[as][he][is now] strong and ready”.[24.58-60] This shows his perseverant determination towards his desire of acquiring knowledge, in order to become a better person.

While most sinners and creatures taught life lessons to Dante, one particular sinner, Vanni Fucci can be considered most important sinner that Dante meets during this journey. When Dante and Virgil interrogate a sinner in bolgia seven, the sinner with a discomforted look identifies himself as Vanni Fucci,the thief of the holy Sacristy.The sinner then tries to avenge himself for his forced disciplines of the bolgia to disclose his true identity. He believes“[Dante] might find less gloat if [he’d] escape[from] [a] [situation][so Dante should] prick up [his] ears and listen to what [he] says”[24.140-141],for here Dante is given the prognostication of the defeat of the White Guelphs. This can be regarded as one of the most important statement that any sinner ever gives, as it concisely shows the degree Dante the author, wishes to portray the events that occurred in his life in order to maintain the spiritual path that he believes that he has obstructed.In this process he tries to become a better person by removing the obstructions in the path while learning from others
