In Dante’s Inferno, the ideas of justice, good and evil, and suffering in hell are implied. The idea of suffering in hell and the idea of justice are closely related. Dante indicates that those suffering in hell have committed crimes that are being punished in a reasonable way and that we should not have pity for them. He uses the setting and his organization of hell to transmit these ideas and his philosophy regarding these ideas. The organization of hell helps us understand that Dante believed it was a person’s poor decisions and not cruel fate that got a person in hell.
Dante's journey is more for self enlightenment in comparison to other great epics, such as Beowulf. Although Dante does not realize it, he is there to improve himself. During this trip, he feels pity for the sinners in the levels of Hell and often faints because of the awful treatment they are being subjected to. He eventually feels compassion for the sinners and realizes that Hell is a place that you would not want to be in. He then goes back to the normal world wanting to tell everyone to change the way they live so they do not end up in Hell, like he experienced on the

Dante ensures this happens by using the concept of contrapasso, which describes the relationship between sin and the resulting justification in Hell. The literal definition of contrapasso is the 'counter-strike' or the 'counter-suffering which translates literally as "counter-penalty." Analogous is the way to express certain forces of nature, intimate qualities of the spirit, sublimation or degeneration of senses through animals. Dante’s Comedy and the mosaic of Otranto teem with animals and monsters: dogs, wolves, dragons, lions, sphinxes, griffins, centaurs, etc. We find all of these representations in both of the works and with the same meaning, same analogies, and same functions.

In The Comedy, Dante the Pilgrim develops a relationship with his damned idol, Virgil, in order to journey through both Inferno and Purgatory. Even though Virgil was a good man while living, he lacked understanding of certain virtues, like pride, which prevented him from being able to reach higher levels in the afterlife. Dante the Poet’s choice to damn Virgil conveys that obeying a higher order is the way to one’s salvation. The developing relationship between Virgil and Dante the Pilgrim throughout the first two canticles brings light to the opposing separation between the two characters because of the devotion Dante has to Christian virtues in comparison to Virgil’s pagan misunderstanding of virtue. The heretics are put in the 6th level of Dante 's Hell. A heretic is someone who does not believe in God. At the front of the gate there were Rebellious Angels, now turned from beautiful to hideous. Their punishment is that they have to be in a fiery tomb that never stops burning. I found that interesting because God wants you to love him and heat or warmth is assassinated with love.
Throughout Dante’s journey in hell and Purgatory, Dante was guided by Virgil. (The Divine Comedy 1: Hell, 1.102) This is an interesting aspect of the story because Virgil happened to be a Roman poet who, through his book The Aeneid, convinced many Romans to believe that Caesar was a god. By placing Virgil as his guide in these books, Dante seemed to lean toward the very non-Christian ideas of the Pagans. The last place that Dante’s writing is flawed is the many extra details he attempts to place into his writing as biblical. For example, Dante gave an in-depth description of hell, stating that it was split into many levels with punishments fit for different types of sins.
The story revolves around metaphors where everything has a double meaning behind what is said. Here what Dante is trying to tell us is that he wakes up in hell because he has strayed from the righteous path that the church and God has set for him. This medieval writing continues throughout the layers of hell sinners are damned to hell and live in a world devoid of any sanitation everything around them is full of suffering and death. Above the gate is a message that tells the beginning of the journey into hell and the suffering that will be caused, “I AM THE WAY INTO THE DOLEFUL CITY, I AM THE WAY INTO ETERNAL GRIEF… ABANDON EVERY HOPE, ALL YOU WHO ENTER” (399, 1). The church brings out these punishments seeing as the medieval era he lived in was during the time that the church dominated a person’s way of living.
While reading Dante’s Inferno readers must understand that none of the sinners are innocent. “By this way no good spirit ever passes” (“Commedia: Inferno”). It is also very important to understand that the sins themselves are not the reason they are condemned to Hell. The reason they are condemned to Hell is due to their failure to repent and ask for forgiveness of these sins. “In Dante’s faith, a soul can only be saved by turning to God for forgiveness” (“Commedia: Inferno”).
The encounter with each soul shows Dante the pain and torture they face, and Dante feels sympathy when he sees how miserable they are, but then feels pity once he realizes that their punishments are just direct consequences for their sins. This shows the significance of one’s conscious decisions, because the decisions one made essentially determines their eternity. In contrast, however, The Scrovegni Chapel includes many scenes of life leading up to Judgement Day, and shows the ideal life that one should live, so that once it is time for their judgment, they will be deemed worthy for Heaven by Jesus Christ, and not have to suffer an eternity of torture and consequences for their sins in
Granted, going through Hell is no walk in the park but within the first six cantos he has already passed out twice and has burst into tears too many times to count! Dante 's got heart. One of his best attributes is empathy but his guide Virgil helps toughen him up as they move along. In fact, Dante toughens up pretty quickly as he rages against Filippo , argues with Farinata , and rants at Pope Nicholas III. After each round of righteous indignation, Virgil claps Dante on the back and congratulates him for putting yet another sinner in his place.
Purgatory fills Dante with relief and hope. As Dante travels through Purgatory, his mind becomes pure through Virgil’s teachings. In Canto III, Virgil teaches Dante “to be satisfied with the quia of cause unknown.” Dante learns to have trust and faith in God and not question His power. Dante confront sinners in a completely different way than in Hell.
