seeks recompense when she sends her brother in law, the bull of heaven to destroy Gilgamesh. Enkidu rushes to the aid of his good friend and brother and kills the bull but now he has now offended the gods and is condemned to death. Gilgamesh is destroyed over losing Enkidu. This sets the scene for Gilgamesh’s journey which becomes one of self-discovery and enlightenment. Having lost his good friend he is now acutely aware of mortality and loss. He is particularly aware of his own mortality and begins a journey seeking immortality. The loss of Enkidu has caused Gilgamesh to question the very meaning of life, accomplishment and everything he has known. Gilgamesh finds himself is in the midst of an existential crisis. Dante however is a mere mortal suffering for redemption for an unspecified sin. Dante is searching for his great love, and the love of God. His journey begins when he finds himself lost in the dark forest, a metaphor for his being lost in life and having strayed from the path of God. Upon Virgil showing Dante’s the circles of hell and the punishments assigned to each sin their journey is complete to show Dante what he will face if he does not find his path of righteousness. Finally, the two at the end of our story find they are on earth Dante having survived. Having survived this struggle of good and evil Dante has found his way back to the right path. I find the ultimate conclusion to be a bit underwhelming as it is vague in what becomes of Dante having come out of Hell and what his life becomes having gone through the experience he has. The vagueness of what Dante takes away from his experience is a bit frustrating in the same way that the reader can only guess what sin Dante committed to have strayed from the path of
