A short story is called a short story for a reason. It is a story that has a lot of action and dialogue packed into only 10-40 pages. And The Birds by Daphne du Maurier did very well with getting everything the story needed into only around 35 pages. This story very easily could have been a 200-300 page book. And that's why I think that the short story and the film are so different. The first big difference is the length it takes to get to where the birds start to go rampant and attack. In the short story it only takes 3 pages when the birds fly into the children's room(The Birds Daphne Du Maurier). In the movie I was so bored watching it for around an hour when finally 1 bird attacked Melanie. I didn’t like how long the lead up to the attack was in the movie. But that's where you see the difference in a short story than a book. There is usually a lot of lead up in a book too. But a short story there can only be 2-3 pages of lead up. In the short story the Characters are Nat Hocken, Mrs. Hocken, Jill Hocken, and Johnny Hocken. They are a small farming family. In the Film The Birds the main characters are Melanie Daniels, Mitch Brenner, Annie Hayworth and Lydia Brenner. They are all small coastal city people. I’m not sure why the movie did this because the characters would have been very easy to keep from the short story. But they decided to change up the characters completely and thats why its one of the biggest
