Women look like powerless figures in most American movies, novels, and books. But, how come? Well, women since the very earliest ages of U.S culture, look as less important characters and people than men are. Women also look like they are powerless in situations, especially in U.S literature. For example, in Devil In A Blue Dress Daphne Monet might seem like a powerless figure; however, that is until further analyzes of her character do we may see that she is not a completely powerless figure to some extent. Why? Because, she is highly sought after by characters in Devil In A Blue Dress. This then not only makes her the Holy Grail in the book, but also gives her a good amount of power as well. She also does not have the flaw of having to use brute power like men do most of the time in extreme cases.(She is very clever.). She can let someone love her, and use that feeling to make someone protect her and use them as well. For example, Mr. Carter, who loves Daphne, pays Easy to protect her since her loves her and find out information about her. If she would have not falsely love Mr. Carter, Mr. Carter did not love her enough, or if Daphne hurt his feelings, then other characters can hurt her or even kill her. In a way Mr. Carter protects her. (Even though several characters did rape her or abuse her.) He says " The money means nothing to me. Daphne and I had a flight and she took the money because she thought I'd never talk to her again. She was wrong." pg.164. This shows how Daphne is able to use a man's feelings to get what she needs, especially one who does not care about money. When Daphne Monet loves a man romantically or likes a man it automatically as Mathew Ganz, a journalist, says " The sad fact is that women play mind games all the time when they want to get men to do things that they want or need (and they can do it unconsciously)."
