The Dark ages were a time when crime was rampant and uncontrollable, a time where branding children for stealing bread was normal. The only solution was a disgusting yet effective way of murder, mutilation, stretching of limbs, and gruesome means of interrogation. They would use animals, and publicly humiliate anyone who was deemed worthy of their torture. They mercilessly killed and mutilated children, it was an unnerving and disgusting example of Man's Inhumanity to Man; due to the forms, the reasons, and the history of the torture in general. They decided to use torture to interrogate and kill criminals. The word "torture" originated from the words twist and turn, this is because the first forms of torture were twisting and turning. “The word “torture” comes from the French torture, originating in the Late Latin tortura and ultimately deriving the past participle of torquere meaning to twist” (James McDonald, “Medieval warfare). After a while, torture evolved and grew more grotesque way of torture. It went from a means of interrogation to a means of murder. A common misconception about torture is the thought that it is only dismemberment, and gruesome murder are the only types of torture there are. During the dark ages, the twisted minds of priests, The King, and their military-inspired torture caused the creation of animal torture. This type of torture required animals, like rats or horses, to eat people alive or tear them apart. Torture also required temperature, sometimes temperature alone would be required to kill, or they would need it with animal torture. They would use heat or cold when they concealed their victim in something similar to a refrigerator, they would then proceed to freeze or burn what is inside (James, Pegg). Medieval Torture (as the name implies) began during the Medieval Times, better known as the Dark Ages or Middle Ages. Torture began around 500 AD and almost ended near 1500 AD (Specifically Medieval Torture, not to be mistaken for normal torture), in the beginning, it was only be used as a form of interrogation by guards, or by murderers and psychopaths. The use of torture by murderers was short-lived, due to assumption and cuneiform from speculators; and it does not seem that murderers used it for long. It was officially started by The King and his need for order, he wanted that criminals would receive a punishment for the transgressions they have committed. Since peace and a reason not to commit crimes were in order, it was thought that crime rates lowered; but it is unknown whether it did anything. (Makena, James, Miller, Gayle) The evolution of Medieval Torture was quite straightforward, the only major way torture evolved was how grotesque and brutal the punishments were.
