The True Darkness of Night As much as the universe longs to postpone the haunting night, it inevitably approaches with the sharp knife of terror. Night follows day and day follows night in an unalterable continuous pattern. In the book Night, Elie Wiesel portrayed the message of darkness and terror caused by one person to another by using the symbol of night. Each night seems to spark a new beginning for Elie as he travels through different situations that invoke him towards the simulation of death. At the beginning of Elie’s journey through the unprotected genocide caused by Nazi’s and other European countries, Elie is taken from the Ghetto's in Singet to a compressed tiny cattle car. As he and his family ascend to the crematory they are both exhausted and fearful. An SS officer confronts the group of Jews Elie is traveling with. He gives the demands to split up between men and women. Not only at this point in the night will Elie’s family be split up but this is also the last time Elie will ever see his mother and sister’s again. All in one night the corruption occurred but sadly emotional pain caused from Elie’ family becoming separated didn’t end here. Continuing on the path to the concentration camp that Elie would soon be held in contempt, he witnessed the burning alive of children and babies. Forever this memory will be scared in his mind and unforgettable. Between the crematory and the point of his father's death Elie and his father had grown a very close bond. Their relationship had flourished and they used each other during certain circumstances as reason to live. The presence of each other in both of their lives gave them a reason to fight the starvation and brutal living conditions. As Elie and his father's time grew longer in the concentration camps so did their age. The older his father, shlomo, got the less healthy his body became. Slowly his body got to the point where it was getting ready to die and no longer was it sustaining the living conditions it was being put through. As the time went on the weaker his body got until it finally got to the point where he could barely walk. One night he sat laying on the bottom bunk calling for Elie to fetch him water. An SS officer walked by and told him to be quite. The officer became irritated once Shlomo didn’t hear him so he smashed his face in with the back of his gun. With already being weak this instance just caused more distress. The next day Elie woke up with his father gone. During the night because of the officers actions to strike Shlomo caused his death to speed up. This caused Elie to be in emotional pain for the rest of the time in the concentration
