In this chapter I will be writing about Darrow and Eo and both of their stories. The first character I will be discussing is Darrow himself. Darrow is the protagonist of the story who lives underneath the surface of mars and mines for something called helium 6 that can terraform the surface of Mars so that the other colors can live there. Darrow and his other fellow Reds were told that in a few generations the surface of Mars would be a liveable environment for people to live on. But what they don’t know is that the surface of Mars had been a liveable environment for generations. The Reds were lied to and treated like slaves. And for this Darrow’s wife sings and illegal song that got her hanged (Brown 42). Soon after Darrow buries her which is illegal. Because of his doings he is sentenced to death by hanging just like his wife Eo. Eo is Darrow’s wife and his drive to do everything. Eo is also the reason Darrow wants to fight back against the Gold’s and make the Reds more powerful. Eo tells Darrow on numerous occasions that he has to live for more, which leads me to when Eo is hanged for going to the surface with Darrow to find out that Mars is already a liveable environment. Since they went to the surface the are whipped and Eo is hanged for singing the illegal reaping song. This is all Pierce Brown writes about Eo, and throughout the rest of the story she is Darrow’s driving force to take down the Golds. When I think of Eo I think of a quote that Eleanor Roosevelt once said. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” I feel like this is the perfect quote that describes how Eo feels about her dream. “I live for the dream that my children will be born free.
