In the Myth of the Soul, Darrow argues against different conceptions of immortality. One of the arguments that he presents to us is that we have a soul that survives our death. Darrow argues that there is no evidence that supports the existence of the soul. Therefore, believers of the soul believe on the basis of faith. However, simply because there is no evidence that satisfies Darrow, it does not mean there is no evidence at all. For Darrow, somebody’s personal experiences with the soul is too subjective for him to accept as evidence because personal experiences are hard to define and standardize. He questions when the soul actually becomes one with the body. Scientifically, we all know how humans are created. That is, with the joining of two cells: one from the mother and one from the father. So during this process, where and when does the soul come in? Darrow makes a convincing argument with his question about two cells that are soulless coming from the mother and the father to produce a human that has a soul. This argument is compelling in a sense that it is simple and on point. He leaves us pondering on the issue of when and where the soul is placed in our human structure. Darrow also argues that if each of our cells have a soul, then every cell that dies would have a soul that left, therefore, leaving many souls out there with no body. Darrow’s argument is a scientific one that draws to our basic biology. This argument opposes the views of religion. In history, there are precedents of the soul. Particularly those in religion, the precedents are very convincing that the soul exists. The belief of the soul has been deeply rooted and would not have come to be without something that can prove its existence. Darrow is trying to counter a belief that existed long before he existed with relatively new discoveries of human anatomy in science.
