Dartmouth's creator, the Rev. Eleazar Wheelock, a Congregational minister from Connecticut, set up the College as an association to train Native Americans. Samson Occom, a Mohegan Indian and one of Wheelock's first understudies, was instrumental in raising the trusts imperative to build up the College.
