The Misunderstood Darry and Ponboy have been clashing for as long as they can remember. Can they finally stop to take a moment and try to discern that they are hurting each other? Darry and Ponyboy are brothers that live alone with their brother Soda. In the novel, they are both antagonists to each other, because they both create fights with one another. At only twenty-one, Darry is forced to take care of his kid brothers because his parents died in a car accident. Darry and Ponyboy have a love-hate relationship because Darry does not listen to Ponyboy, but Ponyboy is reckless and does not use his head. Darry is too hard on Ponyboy because Ponyboy does not use his head, and Ponyboy does not understand the pressure Darry is under. An example of this is in this scene, Ponyboy disobeys Darry’s rules by staying out too late. Darry is sick and tired of Ponyboy’s excuses, and Ponyboy thinks that it is not his fault he came home late. “Ponyboy, what on earth is the matter with you? Can't you use your head? You haven't even got a coat on." (Hinton 50) This quote is significant because it shows how they do not think about each other's feelings. Ponyboy thinks Darry is mad at him and does not understand him. Little does Ponyboy know, Darry was scared that Ponyboy could have been in danger or hurt.
