I hope that during my undergraduate years at George Mason University I will be able to investigate the problem affecting many colleges that is date rape drugs. Rape on college campuses is a horrifying epidemic that our country is facing. According to healthresearchfunding.org “Up to 90% of college campus rapes occur through date rape incidents.” Almost every day on the news there is a new story about a woman who was a victim of rape or sexual assault, and most of the time the perpetrator gets away hands free. A major reason why date rape drugs are commonly used is because they are easily slipped in to drinks at college parties and are undetectable by the victim. It is undeniable that most college parties contain alcoholic drinks that may increase the chances of being a victim of rape. However, that does not mean there is no way for helpless individuals to determine when a date rape drug has been placed into a drink. While at George Mason University, I hope to investigate this problem and aid in discovering a better and easier way to detect date rape drugs that are unexpectedly placed in beverages.
While I may not have been personally affected by this issue, it does not mean that I am not interested in the topic. Starting college is already a very scary time for most students, and I want to make the fear of rape

During my studies I hope to conduct research about the properties of date rape drugs, and take small steps towards creating a detector for them. Once an accurate detector is found I wish to create an easily accessible item for all genders to carry around that could be used to test drinks for date rape drugs. Such as a tablet that would react with the drink, a color changing straw, or plastic cups/ drinking glasses that could change color when the drug is present. A common item like this could change and save the lives of many students, which is my ultimate
