Although Tris dearly values belonging to a community and it being “the most important thing in life” (p.20) she slowly starts to learn that Dauntless’ core value is Bravery and that’s what she is built for. When starting her initiation process through the Dauntless Head Quarters, Tris is slowly to learn that it was not what she had signed up for, from jumping off a train onto a building, then falling seven stories unknowing what was at the bottom to catch her, she did not feel welcomed at all by her new faction. After living in Dauntless Tris, Will, Christina and Al all decide to get tattoos to feel more like a Dauntless member. This makes Tris feel as though she is more accepted into the Dauntless community with her “Three bird on her collarbone” (p.90) creating more hope into belonging to a community as it is “The most important thing in life” (p.20).Through the experiences’ Tris encounters the reader are invited to see that Tris is brave and she does belong in Dauntless but some of her friends just need some warming up to the way the Dauntless community …show more content…

Friends are not the ones that dangle others over the chasm. After being pressured into hurting Tris, Al joins forces with two other boys from Dauntless to gang up on Tris as they feel as though she is becoming a threat to them. After being involved with the fight Al has the urge to talk to Tris and let her know “That I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I don’t… I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I… please forgive me, please….” (p.299), With Tris’ response to his apology she starts to show Al she has no sympathy, “Stay away from me, never come near me again, and if you do, I swear to God I will kill you…. You Coward” (p.300). After Tris’ response and being ranked dead last Al knew he was going to end up factionless and decided that he would rather die than go through the pain of becoming factionless. With a sudden death leader of the Dauntless faction called him, “Albert the courageous” (p.308) as he ventured into the deep waters of the chasm and showed a sign of bravery. Throughout the two phases Al went through the readers are to feel saddened by his actions which lead him to his death making him not belong to Dauntless and didn’t successfully pass the Dauntless
