Dave Pelzer:A Life Reborn Have you ever been given a second chance to do something that you once couldn’t? In the novel by Dave Pelzer, The Privilege Of Youth, Dave Pelzer, a teenager whose childhood was taken away from him by his abusive mother and alcoholic father, gets a second chance to recreate his childhood. Dave who never thought life would get any better, uncovers joys of learning and a thrill of making his first real friends. Dave must first go through a numerous amount of bullies and life struggles to realize that there is a such thing as happiness. Dave Pelzer is a survivor of abuse who remains faithful all the way through to uncover a blessing that he never believed existed. Seeking acceptance, Dave starts to realize after countless attempts of trying to fit in that he should just give up. After being bullied at school Dave have already set his mind to believe that he will never belong nor have friends. “Yet in the core of my soul, all I ever wanted, all I ever craved was to belong. When it’s time for Dave to move away, it’s a heartbreaking moment because Paul and David, the first real friends he’s had, showed him that he does belong in the world. “And for that I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am. Thanks, David. Thanks for being my friend. I turned away before he saw me cry. Before I met you guys, I never thought I was going to make it to twenty. Thanks for always being there for me.” This is an example of how emotional it was for Dave to have to leave his friends, because they helped him get over his devastating past and accepted him for who he was.
