Dave Pepper, the owner of Pepper Construction, was evaluating his safety performance of his organization with his insurance representative. During this evaluation, the insurance representative advised Mr. Pepper that his organization was in the bottom third in what is called the experience modification rate (EMR). The experience modification rate is used to compare compensation claims from one company to other companies of similar operating size and determines if the company is exceptional or not as good as the industry. Pepper Construction was 30 percent better than the national average for contractors, even though this was sufficient, there were two thirds of the insurance group who were performing better than Pepper Construction. The Pepper Construction Company continued to develop as an organization in all facets of operations except one category, safety. Mr. Pepper realized that there need to be a change and informed his employees that the most vital component of the company is the employees. As the push for safety continued, the staff realized the importance of a healthy work environment/ employee’s health and decided to put safety as a priority. Additional resources were used to increase training, and form safety committees to further enforce the safety mentality of Pepper Construction. Since the modifications to safety within side the organization, Pepper Construction added OSHA programs to train the employees. Training lasted about 10 hours per-course. The organization was recognized by OSHA, as a gold member participant of the Building Association category. In order to be a gold member with OSHA, organizations need to meet multiple requirements to include, maintaining an illness rate at least 10 percent lower than the Bureau of Labor Statistics rate for their
