As a whole, we all use fact and reason to back up our arguments and also show why we are so passionate about the things we love, whether it is an object, activity, person, etc. However, Hume argues that there are limitations of reason and claims that reason is the “slave of the passions.” As we continue to have reasons for our passions, we go along with what we believe to be true. However, because of our own reasoning, we fail to admit the possibilities that either; there are others that have different views than we, individually, have, or that our reasoning could be wrong to begin with but we convinced ourselves that we are right anyway. This is very true, referring to an example in the book about one ball hitting another ball effecting the second ball to move, how could we possibly know that without actually experiencing it? It is not something that we can state for a fact just by guessing and assuming, we would actually have to test and experience it to prove the cause and effect of any event. This would be the same for any type of event. Someone might list the reasons why he or she needs to visit Belize with their significant other, but how do they actually know that it is the best vacation spot for them? One person’s reasoning from their experience cannot completely satisfy another’s reasoning if the second person has never been. They would be relying on someone else’s opinion when they have nothing else to truly base it on. Although one could argue that some things are purely based on fact and you cannot always experience somethings, like the causality of global warming. There are so many factors of math and science that go towards the understanding of what is actually causing it to happen and how it is effecting the earth currently and how it will affect it years down the line, that many people don’t even understand, but we choose to trust in what those who do know the science behind it are
