This is very credible, in my opinion, especially given that the theme of the article is a social issue and is meant to inform others of the unexpected tragedies that have come from the Opioid Epidemic. Turkewitz puts together a very compelling and heart-wrenching piece, that given all of the guidelines around credibility, does very well for itself. It is accurate to the best of its ability, fair, as transparent as possible about sources and photographs, independent, powerful, and open-minded in nature. There are not many photographs used, but given the nature of the piece this can be overlooked, because of the plethora of interviews and data that makes the piece truly
While reading the book Farenheit-451 we discovered that Bradbury seemed to have for-shadowed certain aspects of the future. During the book the reader may notice that bradbury hits at certain topics, such as overdose and the quality of life, and conformity along with being careful when speaking to someone. Which is why Farenheit-451 has a powerful message for readers in our world today. The article “OD kills 'Diff'rent Strokes' star Dana Plato” and the book both discuss the topic of overdose. An overdose is when you consume too much of a certain item like sleeping pills or painkillers.
When looking at a scholarly journal or other form of report pertaining to controlled substances, the theme is usually pretty clear; “drugs are bad, people that do drugs are bad, and it’s only getting worse.” Moore challenges this theme by breaking the mold in his article, “The Other Opioid Crisis” by implementing several rhetorical devices to add a more human aspect to the not so black-and-white issue. “The Other Opioid Crisis” is an article that goes into the ethics and the arguments regarding those who are in need of opioids and their stories, alongside other ethical issues they may face. By providing stories of patients, Moore states his opinion which is backed strongly by the pains, both mentally and physically, that opioid prescribed patients face. In these stories he not only provides a detailed account of their struggles, he uses strong language to appeal to the pathos of the reader on a subject that may not be easy for many to sympathize with.
He does a commendable job of avoiding prejudicial tropes of the era and does not demonize the drugs themselves, noting that the drug “was neither diabolical nor divine” (63). By outlining the physical, psychological, and social effects of addiction, Stevenson presents a realistic portrayal of this problem without demonizing the person suffering from addiction, and in couching as a metaphor he successfully avoids exploiting addicts as well. The narrative, especially at the time of its publication, was suspenseful, terrifying, and enthralling, and though these elements may not have aged well as the work seems rather tame by today’s standards, the story of addiction has only increased in
Ellen Hopkins’ Crank is an epic poem geared toward warning young people of the various consequences of using dangerous drugs. However important its message, it provides a single story, a stereotypical tale influenced by pop culture about addiction and the people it affects. In the poem, the heroine, Kristina Snow, gets addicted to methamphetamines, otherwise known as “crank”. Her life takes a downward turn that includes pregnancy and dropping out of school. The poem depicts just one experience with drug abuse and links it to what is perceived to be the most likely thing to happen if you get addicted to drugs, providing a false single story for the young people it targets.
Joshua Caltabilotta 11/2/2015 English 11 period 5 Brave New World Drugs and Alcohol The book Brave New World by Aldous Huxley has many types of themes to it. Drugs and alcohol would have to be one of the biggest themes throughout the book. In nearly every chapter the characters are either taking drugs or talking about drugs. Nearly everyone in this society takes drugs, but there are the few who don’t.
Referred to as the "Black Liberace", James Carroll Booker III was an anomaly of prodigious talent and self destructive behavior. He was obsessive, he had one-eye, and he was absolutely prolific. Edgar Allan Poe, the self-proclaimed poet brought to us a unique technique achieved through his literature that differentiates him from the rest of the famous writers that lived during his era. In his famous story titled “Ligeia” we see how his distinctive technique in writing infuses with the touch of reality and fantasy as well as the gothic side that leaves us pondering whether the story indeed occurred or if it was a simple dream brought up through the narrator. Through his words the story takes shape, and only he can dictate and describe what the women he is involved with mean to him. The narrator that is in the story confesses on multiple occasions to being under the influence of the drug opium.
