There comes a time when a nation must look inward and reflect on what is going on between its borders. The United States as a nation has failed to do this and because of it, people are not aware of the wrongs we are committing through the act of slavery. Treating a race as nothing but property that can be bought and sold not only goes against Christian values, but it goes against the standard principles that this country is based on. If African Americans were not confined to slavery, they could be able to accomplish and provide a great amount of value to this country. Slavery needs to be abolished in the United States because it contradicts many Christian values, it goes against the principles that the United States was founded under, and it …show more content…
Slavery directly violates the Christian principle that God created all humans, illustrating why slavery needs to be abolished in the United States. Currently, in the United States, black Americans are not seen as equal to white Americas; however, this idea goes against the Christian value that God created all humans to serve him. In “David Walker’s Appeal in Four Articles”, Walker states, “God made man to serve Him alone, and that man should have no other Lord or Lords but himself” (Walker, 163). In his appeal, Walker argues that the goal of the Christian faith is to serve God and no one else. This Christian belief is violated through the act of slavery. African Americans, who are humans created by God, are forced to serve their masters on their plantations. Slaves not only serve God but are forced to serve white Americans too, demonstrating how slavery breaks the moral principles of the Christian faith. Through abolishing slavery, African Americans would be granted the opportunity to fully serve God, and God alone. Additionally, the Christian followers in the United States treat slaves as if they were not created by …show more content…
In the creation of the United States, the first line of the Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal; yet this statement is directly contradicted by the slave system that takes place. African American men and women are treated as if they are property that can be auctioned off and sold to white men and women. In the story “Clotel” by William Well Brown, at an auction of buying and selling slaves, “two daughters of Thoman Jefferson, the writer of the Declaration of Independence, and one of the presidents of the great republic, were disposed of to the highest bidder” (Brown, 275). As illustrated in Brown’s story, African American men, women, and children are bought and sold like they are nothing more than objects. Slaves are treated as inferior human beings by white Americans, demonstrating how slavery violates the founding values of the United States. This contradiction between the United States' principles compared to the way they behave is also illustrated in “David Walker’s Appeal in Four Articles”. Walker describes how “the whites are dragging us around in chains and handcuffs, to their new States and Territories to work their farms, to enrich them and their children” (Walker, 170). African American slaves are being taken around the United States to new states and territories to serve white
