On October 21, 2015, Davon Lymon shot and killed New Mexico police officer Daniel Webster during a traffic stop. Webster was cruising in his patrol car through a Walgreen’s pharmacy parking lot when he notices a motorcycle with 2 passengers on it zipping through the parking lot. He runs the license plate, and learns that it is a stolen motorcycle. He immediately pulls up next to the motorcycle, which is being driven by Davon Lymon and his female companion. However, Lymon’s right hand is still free down at his waist. Webster orders Lymon to place his other hand behind his back, but Lymon explains to Webster that he can’t do it because his arm hurts too much to put in that position. This is a common stalling technique that violent criminals use in order to gain valuable time to plan and execute whatever attack they plan on committing against the officer. Webster is no dummy, and knows he is dealing with a shifty and unpredictable suspect. He then calls for backup and explains to Lymon that he better comply because more cops are on the way. Fearing that Lymon would drive away on the motorcycle, Webster made the fatal decision to take his eyes off of Lymon for a brief second in order to shut the engine off. Once he did that, Lymon pulled his .40 caliber handgun and fired multiple shots into Webster’s face and chest at point-blank range. Webster was rushed to the hospital where he fought for his life for 8 days until finally succumbing to his injuries. Lymon was captured later that night by police and was charged with First-Degree Murder. In his interrogation, Lymon told the deputies guarding him to tell Webster’s family that he was sorry for killing the officer.
