Causes and Effects of World Destruction in “The Day After Tomorrow” The Day After Tomorrow, directed by Roland Emmerich, is an acclaimed science fiction catastrophe movie that was released in the year 2004. It is a movie that was loved and appreciated by many people including critics. “Many of the cliches in this movie predate the last Ice Age (Rainer, 2004),” said Peter Rainer who thought that the movie ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ was very informative. This movie received an overwhelming amount of positive reviews from a wide range of audiences. Professor Jack Hall, a paleoclimatologist, discovered drastic climate changes which he believed would affect the world population. He, therefore, voiced out about the problem during a press conference with the world’s leaders in New Delhi. Unfortunately, the American vice president, Raymond Becker, did not heed his advice until matters were out of control. "Our economy is every bit as fragile as the environment (Strieber, 2004)," the vice president says, dismissing Jack 's sensational claims. Due to the advancement of technology in the United States, there were several greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, and the citizens of United States contributed to the emission of these gases in many ways. It is evident that most of the gases came from the combustion of fossil fuels from factories, cars, deforestation, gases used for refrigerator among many others by the citizens. The carbon dioxide gas which led to global warming, trapped heat and remained in the atmosphere longer comparatively to other gases. In the movie, the national average temperature of the United States began to drop sharply, leading to an ice age. Even when New York City was already buried in several hundred feet of snow, the average temperature of the country continued to drop below -100 degrees celsius. This biting cold temperature instantly froze anything upon contact, including buildings, statues, and people. To escape the cold wave, Jack Hall advises his son and the others to stay indoors. While Sam Hall, the son of Jack Hall, and a few others followed his instructions by taking shelter in the New York Public Library and burning books to keep themselves warm, others were skeptical of his advice and took their chances with continuing on their journey in the cold. Therefore, by failing to take Jack’s advice, those who were out in the open were immediately frozen when the cold spell struck.
