Libya’s New Constitution

Libya is a nation which is located in the northern part of Africa with a population of 6.5 million people. In 1969 a nationalist named Muammar Gaddafi came to power in Libya by defeating the british supported King Idris. Overall it has been 41 years since Muammar Gaddafi ruled in his savage ways. In 2011 the Libyans had finally had enough of Muammar Gaddafi’s abuses and lack of political freedom so they stood up and began a civil war. What practices should libya borrow from the United States and how will it help Libya prevent the rise of another dictatorship? Libya should borrow federalism, separation of powers and checks and balances in their new government to prevent the rise of another dictator.

Federalism is power divided between the states and the national government. In document 1 it states “although the people did not have the right to vote, they could only elect people who were approved by Gaddafi himself” (document 1, paragraph 4). In document 3 it states “ the legislative is responsible for creating laws that the entire nation must follow.” It also states “The main responsibility of the president is to carry out laws” and that in document 3 it also mentions “the supreme court reviews laws to make sure they are constitutional, that is they align or agree with what the constitution says.” (document 3, paragraphs 3, 4 &,5).This is convincing because separation of powers means that no one person can do everything entirely on theirits own which means that each branch has to share their power.
