In document 15.2 it talks about The Business of the Slave Trade and how the slave trade was a
slavery as we know it existed in america for well over 300yrs. Although some people fail to recognize its existence there is plenty of evidence that proves otherwise. Evidence exists in the form of picures, slave narratives and slave codes. People continue to argue that slaves outnumbered owners which is somewhat true but fail to understand why slaves could not. Slaves were bound by social, political and economic motives possessed by owners.
In the late 1700s and leading into the early 1800s there was lots of conflict between America and Britain. The British began implementing many different rules and taxes, all of which led many colonists to start to disdain Britain as a whole. Although hating the majority of what Britain was doing, the colonists were still partaking in something common in Britain, slavery. During this time, the idea that a man without freedom was a slave. In order to have freedom, however, a man must own land and be fully dependent on himself.
However, with the way the conditions were for these slaves, it may be the last place they ever see. In the text it states,”The height sometimes between decks was only eighteen inches,so the unfortunate beings could not turn round of even on their sides” (Doc. 6). After reading this, it was obvious that the enslaved people would be mentally unstable because of their lack of air and space. These conditions are only for slaves that obey.
The use of slaves has always been present in the world since the beginning of civilization, although the use and treatment of those slaves has differed widely through time and geographic location. Different geographies call for different types of work ranging from labor-intensive sugar cultivation and production in the tropics to household help in less agriculturally intensive areas. In addition to time and space, the mindsets and beliefs of the people in those areas affect how the slaves will be treated and how “human” those slaves will be perceived to be. In the Early Modern Era, the two main locations where slaves were used most extensively were the European dominated Americas and the Muslim Empires. The American slavery system and the
Slavery Divorce is hell! Often times the pair has been unhappy for years and tried many ways to save the marriage so the family can remain intact, especially when there are children. The Southern States began to divorce the United States when South Carolina seceded after Lincoln was elected President in 1860. Like a family split into by divorce, the United States soon became divided into two separate units (the United States or the Union and the Confederacy) and saw more bloodshed and lives lost than it had before or would ever since the 1860s.
During the nineteenth century, the abolition of slavery did not lead to many positive changes for former slaves. This was due the fact that a majority of newly freed slaves did not achieve anything close to political equality. An example can be seen in the period of “radical reconstruction” in the southern of United States, where freed blacks were able to gain full political rights and power but it came with the harsh price of segregation laws, virulent racism, denial of voting rights along with a wave of lynching that continued into the twentieth century. In the 1840 slavery would become a great debate among the United States due to territorial growth. The United States was gaining growth and many areas were not officially established as part of the United States yet. So settles were eager to start growth is these new lands, but the question would be if slavery would be allowed. The southern regions held their power from the political power they held. The book Kindred, written by Octavia E Butler, the film Roots, Incidents in the life of a slave girl, and the diary of a slave expose just a few of the gruesome and appalling ways slaves were treated. Not only do they show the mechanical inhumanity, but the emotional expedition slaves overcame and overcome on an everyday basis.
