The Enlightenment was a European movement that emphasized reason and respect for humanity. Enlightenment thinkers thought reason could solve humanity’s problems and the literature created by these Europeans greatly influenced educated Americans, including founding fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Much of Enlightenment thought surrounded politics and how a proper political system should be structured. John Locke was an Englishman would argued that the state was obligated to grant natural, human rights to the people it governed. He wrote in his Two Treatises on Government that these rights included “life, liberty, and property.”
In the Lectures on the French Revolution by Sir John Dalberg -Acton, we get the views of Lord Actons, who states that the Enlightenment was not the direct cause of the revolution, but it was the spark that began the fight. Instead, it was the American Revolution that caused the french revolution to break out eventually. (Document 5) In an excerpt from the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. This document shows us how the past ideas of the enlightenment could be brought together to help form a Declaration of Rights.
Two particular enlightenment thinkers were Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Paine’s main focus in his works was that self-government is possible. He really spoke to the colonists in a way they could understand because he was just like them, meaning he was not well-educated but was able to express his thoughts in a persuasive way that impacted the colonists daily lives. The most important pamphlet he ever wrote was called Common Sense and was read by many people, and was even referenced at the Second Continental Congress. Thomas Jefferson was greatly influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment while he was writing the Declaration of Independence, along with many other of the Founding Fathers as well.
The enlightenment was an intellectual and philosophical movement which dominated the world of ideas in Europe during the 18th century. The core ideals that the philosophers had were that all men were born equal, with certain unalienable rights. The enlightenment influenced many other countries to push for a more fair government. The enlightenment also influenced the political ideas of colonists who pushed for independence in Britain. Although Jefferson, Bolivar, and L’Ouverture made several major changes to the government, these leaders did not entirely reflect the enlightenment in their leadership as evident by the treatment towards women, people of color, and the non-wealthy.
Enlightenment philosophy has a great influence on the American colonists lives and beliefs during the American revolution. When the British government purposely infringed on the rights of the colonists, our Founding Fathers was able to apply Enlightenment philosophy to claim independence and support the democratic government. This crisis led the colonists stood up in the American Revolution against the Kingdom of Great Britain for not only their own rights but this event also has a huge impacted later in American future. Throughout the Seven Years' War, Great Britain defeated France and its Indian allies in America, but Great Britain was deeply in an enormous debt afterwards (more than 150 million pounds) (Give Me Liberty, p.141).
The Enlightenment was an important movement that brought up the topics of reason and rationality rather than adapting plain tradition. It first spread through Europe, then traveled to America during the seventeenth and eighteenth century. These suggestions from some of the thinkers created foundation for the French and American Revolutions, eventually also being included into our Constitutions. Most people disagree on who were significant individuals, but in all honesty, John Locke, David Hume and Voltaire are big key players in having critical thinking skills and using them to their advantages. To begin, Great Britain’s John Locke was very prominent in this time period.

The major Philosophers consisted of was John Locke who created our natural rights of, life, liberty, and property. He also believed in a constitutional monarchy. Another philosopher was Montesquieu, he created separation of powers and checks and balances which we use in our government today.

It led to the revolutions that happened in Europe and America. Many of the major philosophers came from the Enlightenment or in some way influenced it such as, John Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Montesquieu. Some of the most important philosophers established ideals still around today such as, Baron de Montesquieu’s system of separation of powers, Rousseau’s social contract, and of course, the focus of this essay, John Locke’s human rights.
