He was born to Mexican American parents as Richard Steven Valenzuela. Valens began playing music at a young age. He started playing the guitar at the early age of five years old. His musical talent was first noticed by his music teacher in high school. She was the one who encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Despite his young age, Valens quickly made a name for himself. At the age of 17, he was signed to the record label Del-Fi Records.
