The main goal of Cody Reynolds is to find out why Meg Garcia, her best friend, killed herself. At the beginning of the book Cody believes she is part of the reason Meg killed herself. During the few months prior to Meg committing suicide, Cody had been distance with her and used every excuse she could think of to avoid going to Seattle to visit her. Cody thought that if she had been a good friend and didn’t separate herself from her, then Meg would’ve come to her for help and would still be alive. Without knowing it, she was trying to find assurance that she wasn't the reason Meg was dead, even though Meg had sent her an email saying, “This has nothing to do with you and everything to do with me. Cody confronted Bradford thinking it will help dull the pain: “I am okay until I look back at the condo and picture the man who made Meg die- a monster, a father, preparing a turkey sandwich for his son.” (241) She learns he has a 13-year-old son and takes no blame for the death of Meg. He claims he never told Meg to hurt herself, because he quoted famous philosophers while talking to her and gave her links to websites that told her how to prepare. Bradford was very careful to make sure he wasn’t breaking the law or directly telling Meg to kill herself. She also learned that it wasn’t her fault and there was nothing she could have done to help. Because of Meg’s depression she was drawn into Bradford and didn’t go to Cody for help.
