The poem, Useless Boys,is one that portrays a feeling of indignation, rebellion and finally, understanding by two boys who grew up with bitter views of their fathers’ onerous jobs. The narrator believes that the only reason his father stays at his job is for the money. In his naivety the son does not realize that at times living selfishly is the way things have to be. Sometimes commitments are made in a self-sacrificial and cowardly manner. No matter how “wrecking” his father’s career, he stays in order to provide for his family.
In the poem, “Oppression”, by Jimmy Santiago Baca, Baca demonstrates many examples of the hope and belief throughout the poem. Baca mentions to the audience that there will always be obstacles which one must prevail before they reach the top. Therefore help the readers recognize that in order for emancipation, one must never stop believing in themselves. An example of hope would be when Baca states,” And always, always, remembering you are human.” Here he indicates that though life may put us through tough times, we must always remember that we are humans and we are capable of overcoming obstacles.
Nature was introduced in romantic novels and poems. In the poem ‘’Thanatopisis’’ by William Cullen Bryant he described death to something that was peaceful and to be embraced. He believed that you become one with nature, one with earth once you die. But in the poem ‘’Devil and Tom Walker’’ by Washington Irving he described death to be evil, sinful. He believed death to horrifying and something to not be embraced.
The Poem “The Poet” by Tom Wayman is a poem that takes the reader through the physical characteristics of your average poet. The entirety of the “The Poet” consists of a list of 14 descriptors that could be used to describe the typical poet. Each of the descriptive phrases seems to be negative towards the unknown poet that he is talking about. Although the poem seems quite literal, a figurative message is portrayed though text, tone, structure and the literary devices used in the poem. To start off, the specific word usage that Wayman chose to use gives off the impression that poets have their drawbacks.
The poem I will be analyzing will be “Uncoiling” by Pat Mora. The theme the author is portraying is the personification of a tornado . It has a dark/fearful/grim tone as she describes the storm that is accruing. The author is using similes, and personification to convey the theme. The very first figurative language used in the poem is personification.
Shane Koyaczan is a Canadian spoken word poet and writer, born on 22 May, 1976 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. His adventure with writing started because of necessity. He had to pay a phone bill but he did not have money. He decided to participate in a local “poetry slam” contest after seeing the poster on the streetlamp in Vancouver. Koyaczan participated in the poetry slam and won.
The authors detail in this story helps you acknowledge the tone in which the author is trying to make you understand that they are homosexuals. They made this clear by stating “he was naked to the waist” which meant that they were comfortable being naked around each other. This phrase helps the reader understand the type of relationship they had towards each other. The author’s diction when he uses “please, baby. Let’s be very, very quiet.”

There are many poems that discuss the relationship between a poet and their parents. The poets Andrew Hudgins and Dylan Thomas were in their late 30s when they wrote poems about their fathers. Thomas ' father was ill during the time that he wrote the poem. It is unknown if Hudgin 's father was ill during writing of his poem (Kirszner & Mandell 890-891). The poem “Hate Poem” written by Julie Sheehan is a poem that is filled with details of the speaker’s hatred for another person. The poem itself contains personification and metaphors, all used to describe hate and the amount of hatred felt for the other. “The blue-green jewel of sock lint I’m digging/from under my third toenail, left foot, hates you” Stanza 3 lines 9 and 10.
