The short story “Dear Brother” written by Bernice Friesen, takes place in a small, quiet little town. One family that lives in this town struggles to deal with outspoken teens with their own ideas, and little money to make them happen. Greg is the son of a successful business owner, the least successful brother of two, and has a younger sister, Sharlene. Greg, when visiting must endure a family that undervalues him and his ideas. Throughout the story Greg faces many conflicts, internally with himself, with is demanding over caring father, and with the circumstance he has encountered. Eventually Greg and his father come in conflict with one another, over the idea that father knows best. This occurs when Greg finds the courage to face his father, speaking his truth. Greg tells his father about failing his university course and not even attending the exam. Greg decided protesting the legislature in Edmonton was a much more important use of his time. Greg expresses to his sister how their father “did what his father wanted him to do and he’s not happy.” (Friesen 32) By Greg accomplishing this hard task Greg has a weight lifted off his shoulder. Greg was no longer dormant in his father’s plans but enduring a conflict to gain his independence. Greg finally mentally stopped hiding from his father, concurring his overwhelming fear that created so much baggage. Throughout the entire short story Greg is forced to endure much growth mentally. When Greg first arrived entering the house and setting down his dirty laundry bag, when his parent came home the father tripped over it and was angry, his mother was just happy, Grey was back.
