Origins of The Plague Death metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal that started in the early to mid 80s. Most of death metal's influence came from another sub-genre of heavy metal, thrash metal, a derivative of punk. A typical death metal band consisted of two heavily distorted and low-tuned electric guitars, one bass guitar, one double-bass drum-kit, and one deep growling vocalist. Lyrical themes can range from extreme violence, war, murder, anti-religion, Satanism, mysticism, folklore, science fiction, politics, and even history. Many fans believe the term death metal came from the eponymous title of a song written by a thrash metal band called Possessed in 1984. Many new record labels started such for new band from all over the world. Some of the bands had a little commercial success, and are still popular even today. However, death metal was not able to break out into the mainstream. Today this day, death metal still has a huge cult following. Most true death metal heads will tell you that they are glad that death metal never made it to the mainstream. That is one of the reasons why death metal is so appealing to some, because it is not a part of the status-quot. The most well known and commercially successful death metal band is Cannibal Corpse. Cannibal Corpse formed in Buffalo, New York in 1988. Former vocalist Chris Barnes vocal style is considered to be one best and most recognizable in death metal. When people think of death metal, they think of Cannibal Corpse. Because of their vile lyrical themes, and their extremely graphic album covers, Cannibal Corpse got a lot of controversy. They were forbidden to sell their albums in other countries. Even some United States politicians tried to stop them from releasing new material. In 1994, the band was asked to do a cameo in Jim Carrey's movie Ace Vetura: Pet Detective. Jim Carry himself asked if the band could be featured in the movie. Bathory was formed by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Ace Börje Forsberg (AKA Quorthon,) in 1983. Quorthon was only 17 years old when he formed Bathory. He is also credited to be the first to use the screechy vocal style that black metal is known for. Bathory's third album, Under The Sign of The Black Mark, is considered the magnum opus of black metal. In the early 90s, the popularity of black metal in Europe exploded. Norway became a major hub for fans and musicians alike However, this did not go without controversy. A wave of church burnings, acts of violence, murder, and suicides were being reported all across Europe . All associated with black metal. Many black metal musicians were members of satanic cults. They believed they were true Satanist, and it was their duty to spread fear, hatred, and evil amongst Christians. Most of these members were let go because of lack of
