Lying is generally the response of someone is looking for self protection or to protect someone else. The Role of Fear in The Crucible Fear plays an important role in the play, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. Fear motivated the accusers and the accused such as the character Abigail Williams, Mary Warren, and John Proctor. Fear motivated Abigail in many ways, first was when her and the other girls were in the woods and they were dancing and Abigail drank chicken blood.
Separation between groups of people, one considered to be superior, creates a motivation of wanting to be on top. Egos’ within the superior group cause them to lie and do what they have to do to maintain status. The isolated group that is put on a pedestal feels that even though their actions are wrong they cannot risk losing their elevated position. In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, men are seen as elite, in the puritan society, above women in the social hierarchy. John Proctor as an exemplary puritan man lives his life as a superior, is unwilling to admit his obvious guilt and struggles in leaving his ignorance and pride behind him with far reaching consequences.
Bewitched by Reputation Reputation is to have a good name with everyone and everything in society. In The Crucible reputation plays a role that you can either want to have a good name or to tell the truth. Telling the truth should be more important than having a good name, John Proctor shows telling the truth is more important, while Abigail and Parris are concerned with their reputation. Arthur Miller’s work from The Crucible, shows that the characters John Proctor, Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams are concerned with their reputation, in how they act, how they are treat, and the kind of person they have become. John Proctor is not troubled with his reputation because he would rather tell the truth.
Throughout the town of Salem, Massachusetts fear has spread. It has affected everyone in the town and has brought nothing but chaos. The people of Salem are becoming more scared and determined to hunt down every witch they can find. In The Crucible, fear is appeared as a negative trait since it makes the people act differently during this period of time. Abigail showed fear when she said that Tituba was a witch and was performing witchcraft.
In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, the characters take a lot of pride in their name. Citizens in the Puritan society of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 believed that a person lived on his name. If someone’s name was sullied by a crime or other immorality, no one would do business with them, so it was important to protect one’s name. Four characters in particular, Judge Danforth, Reverend Parris, Abigail Williams, and John Proctor, went to great lengths to shield their name. Judge Danforth was the judge that oversaw all of the court hearings in the Salem Witch Trials.

In the Play "The Crucible" written by Arthur Miller, the audience can see how rumors of witchcraft costed the lives of many unfortunate woman. The play is based in Salem, Massachusetts and the lower ranked women in the society were being sentenced to death because they were accused for practicing witchcraft. This is the reality for the townspeople in Salem featured in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. For this reason, hysteria and paranoia had the biggest impact on Salem in The Crucible. This is shown through the multitude of accusations and the impact Abigail had on townspeople. Many would argue that jealously and greed had the biggest impact.
Miller uses children as a truth hidden behind a lie as some believe they live in a world of virtue. They were chosen to be the main accusers for their “purity,” their sense of judgement of witchcraft, and their sadistic actions that are considered untrustworthy and unrealistic. In Arthur Miller's play, dignity and reflection of one's self plays an important role in what makes up a person's character. Once hysteria arose about the girls dancing in the woods, due to all the fear it leads to unanticipated accusations, being a slave, Tituba was accused by Abigail to avoid any punishment.
