A perfect society can never exist in our world today. Although may seem like one at the start, most societies that try to create a utopia, end up becoming a dystopia. The Stanley Milgram Experiment examines the barbaric nature of humans by testing whether or not ordinary people will listen to those who say they have more “authority” than them and by using small steps of evil to achieve the end goal. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of boy’s land on an island with no parents or rules and end up creating a society. Golding takes these same ideas brought from the Stanley Milgram experiment and reciprocates them in his novel.

In the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, written by Ken Kesey, the narrator of the story named Chief Bromden goes through tremendous character development through finding the courage and confidence to face his fears. Since the beginning of the novel, the “fog machine” is mentioned several times by Chief Bromden, as it was something he always used to help him hide away from other nurses and patients. He describes it as a thick fog that clouds his vision, as said through the quote: “They start the fog machine again and it’s snowing down cold and white all over me like skim milk, so thick I might even be able to hide in it if they didn’t have a hold on me” (Kesey, 7). A decision's effects can be profound. Selfishness is frequently associated with decision-making, but is it really selfish if it's for the greater good? This question is incorporated into John Steinbeck's novella, Of Mice Men, in which George had to make a pivotal decision for the better. Throughout the novella, George is responsible for Lennie, who is mentally handicapped. Due to his mental impairment, Lennie lacks self-awareness in his strength and is unable to refrain from harming people and the animals he cares for.
Of Mice and Men One time, standing in my cabin, I glanced outside to see the grazing horses and the jumping rabbits. I felt light, yet remorse, because rabbits are a symbol in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Rabbits were the fixation Lennie had and hope he held on to for a better future. John Steinbeck gives a hopeful, sorrowful tone throughout the whole book Of Mice and Men (1937). In the book, George and Lennie bounce around from job to job, never having a solid place to call home.
The launching point of my visual is the following quote, “’He must have had a nightmare… But there isn’t a beastie’ There was no laughter at all now and more grew grave watching” (28). In the quote Ralph is trying to convince the young boys that there is no beastie on the island and the young boy with the mulberry-colored mark on his face. The beastie is one of the many things that deeply frighten the boys on the island. In my visual I have drawn a huge eye, it symbolizes the ways one reacts to fear, one can open their eyes and experience the fear or one can close their eyes and ignore it.

Breaking conformity and the strict rules of an oppressive power does not always lead to freedom and liberation often ending instead in further suppression as displayed through Ken Kesey’s novel ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’. Kesey uses an extensive range of literary techniques to display the negative and harmful consequences of defiance against the conventions of a dominant society. Nurse Ratched has created her idea of a functional society and punishes patients when they do not fit this mold, stripping them of their individuality.

The story of Of Mice and Men is about two friends in the 1930s, Lennie and George. They are migrant workers who have a dream like every other worker, they want to be independent. They want to live on their own farm and finally be in control.
When Franklin D Roosevelt was in the presidential race with Herbert Hoover, he said something that has had an impact American citizens since 1932, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Although some people believe he was a loiter and had some pretty bad policies as president, he had something going with this quote. While most presidents typically produce quotes that make you want to fear yourself into voting for them, FDR decided to lift the fear factor altogether. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the boys allow fear to consume them and take over their sense of judgement, much like FDR warned Americans of nearly 100 years ago. Fear can cause your mind to react in ways you have no control over.
Injustice is everywhere, but in an abundance of different shapes and forms. Judgement is the basis of injustice and people are judged on a multitude of reasons like: where they come from, the language they speak, who they are, what they are, and what they do. Injustice also appears in novels, and the characters fight against it. Two novels that have this are The Outsiders and The House of the Scorpion. The characters in these books fight against the injustice to make their world more fair.
“And may the odds be ever in your favor”. That is a quote from the book “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. There are many themes in the Hunger Games, but one of the biggest themes is rebellion. This essay is about the many acts of rebellion and standing up to people who “control” you (In this case, the Capital) from the book. Some examples of standing up to the capitol are when Peeta and Katniss both almost ate the berries that would've killed them both, when she gave Rue a burial with flowers, and when district 12 gave a 3 finger salute.
Tragedy can spread. In Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman is the protagonist, however he not the only person in the play who’s story ends tragically. His view on life spreads to those close to him. Primarily, Willy teaches it to his children who look up to him while his wife simply attaches herself to him, rooting for him in blind support while really she should be waking him up to the cold and dark reality that is their life. Throughout the play, the Loman family evolves differently.
