Article Summary
This article argues for rehabilitation to strengthen the community, protecting criminogenic conditions and disabling the effect of imprisonment. The article explores two main ideas of prison, one being violence and the other one being health. These ideas show that correctional institutions can be harmful and may be understood as disabling. There is an increase violence inside of prison. Which takes place because of overcrowding and since there is no privacy.
The inmates were kept in solitary confinement, and they face physical mental disabilities.
Inmates that served long periods in prison adapted to the new norms of violence and intimidation to survive the prison environment.
Inmates have a difficult time when they come out of imprisonment. They have weak connections to society/resources such as housing, relationships, employment, and inner personal resources. Theoretical Perspective
Strain Theory: It is an approach that looks at conflict caused when people cannot achieve their goals. They are denied access to adequate education opportunities and social support. The inmates do not have the same social support, education which can cause a more likely case for reoffending. Questions
Since, there is overcrowding and no privacy and it can lead to more violence, what could you do to reduce this problem?
Since, the main goal of prison is to reduce reoffending, but that has not been taking place in prisons, what efforts can you make to reduce reoffending?
