In grade 11, I was introduced to the DECA club. DECA is an international organization involving students in business leadership and networking with other DECA clubs that share similar business interests, learning skills and goals. The DECA competition component involves a written exam and case study presentation, tailored to a specific business category. Teams are clustered by a school, where students may compete individually or in a partnership. My high school started DECA for the first time in 2014 and I thought, what better opportunity to pursue my interest in business than to become a founding member of this program at my school. Having experience with the DECA community, we are driven with a goal to place at Regionals in order to earn us another spot at Provincials. Additionally, our returning team set as a goal to increase the awareness of and expand the membership of our club. Through conversation, we reached out to other students, sharing the highlights of the club and successfully doubled the size of the competing team. One of my own friends was so intrigued with my experience, they joined as well. We successfully placed in the Top 10 this year at Regionals, once again advancing to Provincials in February 2016. Our effort to involve students of all grades and ages continues and the progress we have made in the last two years is evidenced by the 15 competitors we are sending from our small yet expanding club to the Provincial level. In addition to our weekly club meetings and competition opportunities, our team chose to reach out and build a relationship within the school and the Port Perry community. This year we have partnered with the school yearbook team to contribute to the design, creation, and marketing of the book. My job, specifically, is to market and publicize in order to get it sold.
