Our world can be a very tricky place; it can deceive people in almost all of its aspects. Some examples of deception would include commercial products that do not give you satisfaction, to people lying to you for years on end. In the short story “The Necklace” Madame Loisel is deceived by the world with beauty and cosmetics. The theme of deception is widely shown in the story as deception of oneself, others, as well as the role deception played in Madame Loisel’s downfall. Throughout the story “The Necklace” Maupassant writes,” She suffered so much when she came back”(236). This is implying the thought of self-deception because Madame Loisel had to restrict herself from going to her friend’s house because every time she came back her insecurities would take over. Self deception is often defined as a feeling or voice inside oneself head that tricks them into thinking something false or untruthful. Another way to look at it is a brain trap that at the time you might think it is the best option and will be worth it when it is really misleading.
