The suspense in the story comes from the ever so classic struggle between good and evil and subsequently the uncovering of deception. Back in Kansas in the beginning of the film, Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, Dorothy’s guardians, fail at rescuing Toto from the evil Mrs. Gulch as they practically stand around and watch the puppy be taken away. They also fail to protect their farm and Dorothy from the tornado that tears through their city. This is the film’s first account of the deception of adulthood. It is at this time that Dorothy realizes that if she wishes to do something relying on others will only lead to disappointment and that she must act on her own. Dorothy becomes very fond of Oz, but knows it is not where she belongs. While attempting to find her way home, Dorothy is greeted by the beautiful and elegant Glinda. Dorothy, however, is again deceived. Glinda tends to relish a bit too much over the death of the Wicked Witch of the East, calling for celebrations and then goading the witch’s sister. The Wizard is sought out on the belief that he can provide the Tin Man with a heart, the Lion with some courage, the Scarecrow with a brain, and Dorothy with her one-way ticket home, but the man who can seemingly give anyone anything turns out to just be the man behind the curtain. All of them already possess what they believe they lack, but they are unable to see it for themselves. At the end, the Scarecrow reveals his true intelligence, the Tin Man displays his love, and the Lion uses his courage to take his deserved place as King of the Forest. They did not need anyone else to fix them or solve their problems; they already had within them what they needed the whole time.
